Against Forgetting
In memory of Giorgio Orelli (1921-2013)
Swiss/Italian literature has lost a unique and much loved voice, with the death of Swiss poet Giorgio Orelli, at the age of 92.
Following a poem, of which he says that it is one of his favorite and very own.
[Certo d’un merlo il nero …]
et già di là dal rio passato è ‘l merlo
deh, venite a vederlo.
(Petrarca, CV, 21 sg.)
Certo d’un merlo il nero
mazzo di fiori d’un rosso
sorpreso dalla morte
nel breve buio d’un sottopassaggio
l’indomani farfalla
enorme d’un nero
punteggiato di rosso
nessuna traccia del giallo aranciato
il terzo giorno crosta
sfaldantesi in squame
eczema dell’asfalto il quarto
girasole dai petali rari
raschietti di spazzacamino
mai scomparso
così che di sull’orlo
più d’una nuova potè raccontarmi
lo spazzino-necroforo
esperto solo di trasmutazioni
rapide
e in un mattino
pareva lentamente incenerirsi
ma nei fiati di nebbia del ritorno
ancora suppurava
toccati di bianco volani andavan variando
protesi verso piogge
sottili, già primaverili
ditelo ai merli sui marmi invernali
prima che i fiori del diavolo
moltiplichino il becco
delirino azalee
He speaks in this poem of a dead blackbird, which was crushed in the street and there westernized slowly. He commented as follows: “These transformations, this ever-changing race towards immortality, this always changing illusion of immortality, this dying and non-dying, this continuation of the remains, this is a great topic (…)”
