PHOTO 1 An Introduction to the Art of Photography by Katie Stern

PHOTO 1: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY “is the must have book for photographers looking to bridge the gap between traditional and digital photography. This comprehensive introductory text eases the transition from one system to the other while developing the student’s understanding of the scope and importance of this evolution. Not only will students learn how and why to create photographs, but also how to evaluate them from both a technical and aesthetic viewpoint. Through strong visual examples and artist statements from photographers around the world, PHOTO 1 investigates photography as an artistic and visual communication tool. Unique among other introductory photography books, this text also introduces students to copyright law and best business practices for photographers.”

About Katie Stern:
Katie Stern has been a professional photographer since the late 1980s, working in commercial, stock, and fine art photography. Her photos have been published in posters, calendars, magazines, and greeting cards across the country. Her fine art photography has won awards in national art competitions.
Extensively trained in both traditional darkroom and digital photography, Katie is in a unique position to write about both practices. Her book, Photography for the 21 st Century, bridges the gap between traditional and digital camera and darkroom techniques. Her insights and discussions regarding visual literacy help readers make meaningful images while applying concrete technical information.
An educator for over ten years, Katie holds an Individualized Master of Arts Degree in computer graphics from Antioch University McGregor and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of Professional Photographers of America and the Society for Photographic Education, and is an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop CS2, CS3 and CS4. She currently teaches in the Web and Digital Media Development program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
